Martin Luther King Day Speech Contest 2014

In partnership with the Walters Art Museum, BUDL is hosting an essay-writing contest for our debaters. The authors of the winning submissions will have the opportunity to read their essays in public at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Family Festival at the Walters Art Museum on January 20, 2014. The two strongest elementary school essays, two strongest middle school essays and the two strongest high school essays will receive awards along with the honor of speaking.  Essays should take no longer than five minutes to read.

Students are asked to write a two-three page essay on one of the following themes:

  1. What can you do to continue the work of Dr. King and make the world a better place?
  2. Write about someone/something that has been important or inspirational in your life and how you feel compelled to pass that gift on to others.
  3. Write about your experiences getting involved in your community and taking a stand on something that was important to you in order to make your community stronger.   Do you think that this is in line with the teachings and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.?
  4. What has been the most important legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.?
  5. Talk about a lesser-known figure and why they were so important to the struggle for civil rights.
